Tucker enjoying his kitty grass.

"I like you, JS, but you really scare me!

A loving greeting

Kitty Colony meal together.

Yard kitties relaxing.

Noisy unit of interest.

Tucker watching the backhoe.

"I've had enough noise, it's time for a nap.

Tucker getting warm in the morning sun.

Tucker taking his morning bath.

This is going to be one clean kitty.

Chloe snoozing in my lanai chair.

We had some action yesterday when a backhoe began clearing the lot in front of our lanai. Once the kitties had their dinner they went to investigate. They ran up and down the dirt pile, checked out every inch of the backhoe and even sat in the seat pretending to drive. After a while  a few of them used the newly turned dirt for a potty. Tucker got into watching the backhoe in action but as kitties do, got bored after a while. Chloe wanted nothing to do with the action.

My kitties keep me mighty happy. They are always good for a swoon and a laugh.

I got up at 5am this morning and heard my colony of furry friends calling me in very loud voices. It made me laugh as Tucker was also very loud in his desires. I think I need to set up my espresso machine before I go to bed as I'm continually in third place for priorities in the morning. Thanks, Jackie.

Cuties abound!

I admire a cat's ability to totally ignore whatever it wants to ignore, and to ignore it with fierce determination. Me, I'm more like Dug.

I'm a "Dug" person too, CrowMeris, so when Tucker is mellow about noises and takes everything in stride I'm impressed. He turns his focus easily but with the backhoe doing its thing I was stuck watching it while he napped through the noise.

Cats know what to do with a large pile of dirt that invades their territory:-)) Bet that Tucker scented that equipment and claimed it as his. I hope it has a great scent that is noticed when used again by a human:-)) Tucker spraying ‼ and ♥ cats.

Tucker stays on the lanai so he had to simply look longingly at all that dirt. I know he had fantasies about it. Tonight most all the kitty colony took advantage of the dirt's toilet properties. It really was a fun watch for me. I love how the cats investigate and sniff around. The birds were very interested earlier as there must have been a million seeds out their to eat.

Birds loved mowed fields and new dirt for both seeds and bugs. I bet you have enjoyed this and it is better than having them afraid. Glad everyone is happy including you js.

Cats provide endless amusement, love, and even irritation (as when my 18-year old, Shadow, decided that the kitchen floor was a better location for peeing and pooping than the litterbox).

My 4 year old, Puff, was sitting in the front yard, minding his own business, when a pine cone slammed down about two feet away from him. Puff literally flew up about six feet, landed, and attacked the offending pine cone. He was hissing, swiping, and spitting at the cone, until he got the last word: he turned around and sprayed it! Then he walked away, pausing briefly from time-to-time to look back and hiss.

My friend and I had seen the whole production, and were hangimng on to one another as we laughed our butts off!

Oh Steven, that is a hilarious story. I can't imagine being able to breath, laughing at that sight. I'm never all that enthusiastic when kitties decide to pee in places that are not approved. Tucker is my grandkitty and is going to be 18 this year. My daughter moved to a no pet zone and left him with me. There were times when he'd get disgruntled with her and pee on whatever she left on the floor. It wasn't unusual to hear, "Tucker! Why did you pee on my towel, shirt or some other item?" He's been really good since she left. He doesn't get upset with me but is a royal nag a lot of the time.

Puff sounds like he has priorities when anything offends him.

These feral kitties are great entertainment for me. They try to get close to me but at the last minute scoot away. They know I'm a pushover however and I think they like this a whole lot.

I talked to the man clearing the lot and a house will be built. Hopefully the codes prevent a two or three story home on the site. It is a pretty small lot so I'm not sure how this will all come down, VerbalBarb.

The kitties seem to adjust to just about any change so this is a relief. The builders when they come won't start until after the morning meal and must leave by 3:00 pm. The cats come early (around 5:30 am and leave before 7:00am)and don't come back for dinner until 6:00 pm. I'm sure they will be diligent house building inspectors.

My cats play at night and they get loud and rowdy. Considering they are both over 20 lbs, they can make a lot of sound. When my parents were here, they made so much noise one night, I actually got up to find out what was going on. Snoop knocked over the water bowl and my kitchen floor was flooded. I thought I had a leak until I realized what happened. The water ran down the air condition ducks and return duct which soaked the filter. At 3 am, between my cats and me, my mother was ready to kill us all until she realized I was grabbing towels and running around like crazy. She started laughing because she could hear me wading thru so much liquid. Her laughter was a relief for me and the cats.

I am use to their playful behavior at night but that was an unusually loud night.

I love nighttime kitty stampede Gen. I'm happy to hear "grandma" laughed instead of being disgruntled. Last night Tucker was making an unusual noise and I found him trying to get a praying mantis off the sheer curtains. He's never done this before and I was happy to know how tuned into him I am. He's a great alarm clock and I rarely sleep past 5:30 am. Sometimes if I just get up to go to the bathroom and head back to bed he puts his ears down and stomps back to his bed. I'm happy he has Chloe and the yard kitties as otherwise I'd feel obligated to get him a companion. Then I'd have two romping kitties in the night. Twenty pound kitties like yours don't sound like they are all that light on their feet.

20 lb. kitties? That sounds familiar. Puff, Livingstone, and Shadow are all twenty-plus pound male kitties, and when they decde to play, stampede, or argue, it's loud enough to wake the dead.

Then there are Fred, Orange Kitty, and Trouble, all six to eight pound females, and they can make a racket that is even louder than the boy cats. So, with all six stampeding, the noise can go on for hours!

Steven, you and Gen have brightened my day with your hilarious kitty accounts. Tucker only weighs 13 pounds so he's a lightweight I guess. I have 15 in my kitty colony and there is only one that is a bit bigger than Tucker. When I adopted the colony the kitties were a bit disheveled and underweight. However, in the past 6 months or so they've plumped up considerably. I'm sure my pampering has been a factor in this. They are so sweet and funny to watch so they give as much as they get.

In the morning I have a few waiting on the landing for me. One in particular is so adorable as it really wants to bond to me but hasn't made that step yet. This morning it waited and stayed very close to me as I took the steps to their feeding area. It was such a gift for it to give me a couple of rolls before it ran over to the feeding trays. These adorable cats are bonding to me and even though some are very fearful they do their best to let me know I'm good stuff.

Do your kitties run and howl? Tucker loves to romp and yell and I find this hilarious. It is loud but so joyous I can't complain.

My cats both talk to me all the time. Lately, Snoop started howling at night. She learned it from my mothers female cat. OMG, what a sound. If she wants something, she talks but the howling, not a clue why.

Peanut, my male will actually walk on top of me when I am sleeping when he thinks it is time for me to be up. Sometimes when I am sick, he will sometimes wake me intentionally. My mother watched this several times and she said when my breathing gets abnormal, he does this to make me wake up and breath normally. Does not always make me happy but at least I know why. He is heavy. Not fat, just a large long male cat.

Snoop as you know is part bobcat. She is a large cat and fat. The Vet said it is because she was bottle feed when we found her in the land fill. I was so shocked when I heard she was a half breed. She can howl too. She also snores horrible. Every night, snoring at my feet. I am use to it now. I do not know how to put her on a diet especially since I have two cats. ugggggggg. Her tuffed ears, spots and strips and snoring/howling. I do not know how you guys deal with so many cats. Both mine are indoor cats but they are the joy of my life. I would love to have more cats but the two I have make enough noise to wake the dead.

I learned one thing not to do. I hang a long toy off of my ceiling fan. I thought it would come off easy. Snoop leaped on it and almost pulled down the ceiling fan. Shocked me when I saw my cat hanging onto the cloth swing back and forth. The fan was not on which is lucky for all of us. I thought she would just bat at it.

Your kitty stories are always a delight, Gen. You have a couple of real characters on your hands that's for sure.

Tucker snores quite loudly at times so I know he's related to me. My daughter had the nerve to say she loved it when Tucker snored as she did not miss me quite as much when I moved to the island.

I could just imagine Snoop twirling with the fan going full blast. What an image.

Snoop, the carousel kitty! LMAO!

My gang of cats each have their own ways. Orange Kitty, while only about 7 pounds, is the undisputed boss of the gang. When she hisses, the rest run and hide. When I'm feeling particularly bad, she will crawl under the covers with me and purr me to sleep. When I wake up, she's asleep in her usual place in front of the heater.

Livingstone loves to go on walks with me, and he's a great companion. Once, he darted off into the underbrush and came back with a present. He really wanted me to have his fresh-caught live mouse. After some argument, an escape, and a recapture, I persuaded him to keep the mouse, which he killed and ate before rejoining me on the walk.

Puff, the enemy of all pine cones, thanks me every time I let him in or out. He's also Livingstone's younger brother, Orange Kitty's youngest kitten, and Father of my youngest, Trouble.

Fred, who is a very light orange-cream in color, was named after a girl I knew, who liked to be called "Fred." Fred loves to follow me all over the place, and has recently decided that being a lap cat is a really great way to get in lots of petting. She will also howl from time to time, but I have yet to figure out who or what she's yelling at.

Trouble, the youngest, loves a feline version of "doorbell ditch." She scratches at the door, and when I open it, she darts away, looking back to make sure I know who did the deed. She's the last of a litter of five I rescued, after their mother died under my place. The other four died over the course of a few months last year, but Trouble is a happy, healthy young cat, with an amazing ability to be underfoot even when I'm sitting down.

Steven, you were given a gift by Livingston. Thank you for your stories.

I have a fenced in play pen and a cat door. It is not very large but allows them fresh air and to get closer to birds and watch them. They talk to anyone that walks by. It is funny. Every now and then, one of the cats will bring in a gecko and drop it at my feet. The race is on. I am trying to get the little lizard outside, snoop is on a kill mission, peanut just want to play with it - to the death. It is not safe to let cats run where I am. I live by a large lake with huge gators. Everyone here has learned the hard way to keep their pets safe.

Gen, you're welcome, and thank you for your stories, as well.

As it happens, where I live, the only reptilian monsters are rattlesnakes, and the cats rarely come in contact with those. However, over the past six years, I've lost four cats to coyotes, and one to either a mountain lion or a black bear, both of which were sighted in the area that day. Every area has its hazards, and I wish my kitties were big enough not to be prey, but them they'd be tigers!

You both have hilarious cats. Chloe brought a bird up onto the lanai the other day. She went right under my chair and I thought she was going to eat it there as she's done this one other time. Instead she comes out from under the chair and I see the little bird's head sticking out one side of her mouth and it's little tail out the other. She looks in all the plants, digs around in the yard debris sack and repeats the routine. I caught a hint that perhaps the bird was still alive so just kept watching her. She tried to put it down on her scratching mat but it fluttered so she grabbed it again. She then took off the lanai wandered around and almost lost it and brought it back up onto the lanai. As she was looking around for a place to stash it she was talking. It was a murfal, murfal meow sort of sound and I was cracking up. She took it back off of the lanai and set it down and it flew away. She tried to catch it but missed. She looked up at me then toward where the bird took off and flopped on her side in the gravel. That was one disappointed kitty.

js; I love the look they give you when an animal gets away or you rescue it. The look is like, "Well, are you going to help or just sit there? Snoop gives me a discussed snort like she is temporarily upset at how useless I am. Never last long.

Steven, That is why I was shocked when I found out that Snoop was a bobcat mixed with a domestic cat. Bob cats tend to kill domestic cats. In Florida both bob cats and panthers are smaller than those out west. I guess there is a time when the call of sex is louder then the need to eat. Or course, I have seen mountain lions, that drive does not count with them. Especially when they realize a cat is just to small for them which would likely make them angry.. I worry about snakes here. I use chicken wire with wood layers so they can get up as high as possible to view the world. Snakes can get into anything and I worry all the time. Both cats have no fear of snakes. In Florida we have too many that can kill with a bite. Well, I started this and they would abuse me if I stopped letting them see the world outside.

js, Tucker looks like L and Chloe looks like the cat across the street. I mean alot like the two! L is only 4 or 5 years old. I'm the only person L trusts however. There are alot of people that do not understand that. L will not let them get close to them. Everytime I hear you talk about Tucker I always think about L. I love my cat. And I was never a cat person. How things can change! Where Tucker has a white spot on his back L has an L shape on his back. That is where he gets his name from. My mom and brother gave him that name. I hope I can get a picture of L sometime to show you. He is like the only family I have now. How many other cats are in your colony?

My colony is 15 strong, YTC! I am very attached to each one. They have their buddies and especially in the evening will come over wait and yell for their buddy until it comes along. They manner in which they greet each other gives me cause to swoon. I love watching them eat with heads together and tails entwined. Now that I've had them all for a while more and more of them have connected as buddies. There is only one that is not part of the colony that is naughty. When he's around and aggressive toward the others all I have to do is go outside and he'll take off to his home under the neighbor's house. I wished he'd be nicer but he's a loner and a bit of a bully so I think he has personal issues.

Your kitty sounds divine and I do hope you get a photo so we can see L in all his glory. You and L are part of my family, don't you know?

15 furry friends never leave me bored, Gen. They are so adorable and have great personalities. I feel badly that I haven't named them but with all but 5 different enough to tell apart it has been rough to find names and know which one is which. I'm getting better all the time as only a few of the ten are short hair tabbies. I could name all the long hair "Fluffy Tail" I suppose.

Kitty grass is, well, grass. It comes in these boxes, complete with soil and seeds, just add water. If you want your cat to be able to eat grass, and there isn't any around, well, you have this choice.

I bought some Kitty grass several years ago, and my finicky Persian wouldn't touch it. On the other hand, the cat really ate up my one houseplant, a nice fern the BF had given me. So, she had her green stuff and I had a 12" by 6" lawn on my coffee table. It worked out in a typical feline way, lol.

Catnip, according to my dictionary, is an aromatic herb in the mint family, which cats are fond of. That understates the case by several orders of magnitude. Most cats won't touch beer, wine, or hard liquor, but if you want to see a drunken cat, give it a bit of catnip!

Steven is right, Piletre, kitty grass is simply grass, but high quality grass. Tucker has always loved his grass so I keep a fresh batch going all of the time. If kitties have tummy trouble they like the chlorophyll the grass provides. Of course if Tucker is chowing down on the grass I know we'll have a "hurl" coming on soon. It does settle his tummy however as does Catnip. I keep an abundance of Catnip growing also. I cut it and spread it around for the kitty colony then watch them bliss out rolling in it. They do seem to get high on the stuff, with glazed over eyes and smiles on their little kitty faces. lol

Chloe belongs to the neighbors and I met her three years ago as a kitten when I moved to this house. She was very evasive for the first couple of years yet I'd find her hanging around when I worked in the garden. One day she flopped down on my foot and that was bonding day. She owns me now. I hope that a few of the colony feel as comfortable with me one of these days but in the time being they are just alright with me as they are.

They're 'colony' grows and thins out. Sometimes, I think some of the farm cats come to visit and then leave again. One was the color of yours and Huge. Most of the neighbors are Manx's that think they're Tigers or Lions or something on that order. LOL They chase the squirrels, birds and dogs ....And I mean the bigger dogs too! It's a sight to behold how they 'hunt'.

Your little colony are great to watch, do post more photos as you can find time for about them. Ahhh cats what we do without them?

Though I'm allergic to cats (except when I take Benydrl) we pretty much don't mix it up. I leave them little treats once in awhile..tuna mostly. They love me and keep the mice away...Lots of mice in farm country even when you live in 'town' ...town being like 1,400 tops...lol

My dad was especially tender with all the farm animals. He emphasized that every animal was precious and even though we raised some for food they should have the best of life up until the moment they were killed to grace our table. I loved the mornings when the cats, dogs, chickens, pigs, cows and whatever animal we had would greet us with great gusto. People often dumped cats on our land and my dad was just fine with this as they kept the mouse population at bay. I remember early morning laughter as I held the suckle bucket for a calf and be splashed with the formula as the baby was so into having its breakfast. I'd hang with my dad while he milked the cow after feeding all the animals. We'd take the bucket of milk into the house and pore it into the separater. So, having my kitty colony is the closest I can come to this experience and it's just fine with me.

The cats were so cute this morning investigating the lot. They were climbing the Papaya trees two at a time, found some boards that allowed them to crawl under and over.

I will take more photos, mstanley as it is staying a bit lighter at night and getting lighter in the morning. I'm also allergic to cats so Tucker cannot come into my room and hang with me. Luckily the house is open and well ventilated so my allergies are held at bay. I do have issues when Tucker sits on my lap to watch movies with me but I cannot resist allowing him to do this as he loves being on a lap.

Out of the 15 cats there are only 5 that are not orange tabbies, Fada. Some are long hair and some short hair. The other 5 are two black, two calico and one white with dark tabby spots. Don't you just love having a colony of furry friends? Life is good. Thanks, Fada!

my cat, scrapper, is extremely well trained. You couldn't imagine training a cat, but he has been trained, as long as you want him to ignore you. :P

True , my siamic cat is trainable like dogs the others are almost stubborn actors and actresses :) but I know they are loving and grateful little friends. I put an old article and pics for some of them them on my page but I am not sure if linking it here is ok

well I say that he is trained as sarcasm because the only thing he will reliably do is ignore you. :P

He is a 'good little friend' though, and he does things that make you feel appreciated not because you tell him to, but because he wants to. I was sick recently and I know he could sense that, because he wouldn't leave my side, he stayed next to me all the time that I was ill. Something that he wouldn't normally do.

Now the dog, he does that anyways, but he is definitely a well trained pet,

Linking your article here is just fine with me, Fada. I'm headed your way to take a look right now.

Tucker is pretty good at taking directions. He's like a kid though and will try to make a case for himself. He knows my ankle is not a toy but sometimes he forgets.

Thanks js-445607, here's the link of my colony of fur balls but the orange family are not existing in photos of this old article because they joinded the colony after I wrote this article

Jonathan

About training, I have a big number of cats and they show wide diversity of characters and behaviours , I have the emotional, stuborn, funny , stalking, sharing, managing, independent ,selfish , and the sycophant :)

I love them the way they are and I don't train them but for not spoiling house hygiene and cleanliness

LOL; Pride is another good name for some cats. There is always one that displays pride like it is a badge of honor.

Tucker doesn't treat my daughter like he treats me. When I went back to Portland after 6 months on the island he just took up where I'd left off. I would wake my daughter in the morning before work and when I left he took over. She said she didn't mind unless it was her day off. The next time I returned it was 9 months later and that's when I moved her and Tucker to the island. He was so funny about having me there. So when he came here he knew the routine right away.

I had three feral cats in Portland that friends took over for me when I left the first time. Each time I visited they came right back to me. The last time I was there the neighbor that takes care of them asked me if I'd seen them and there they were on the porch. She yelled to her husband, "I found them, the little traitors". She did let me feed them up until the day I left, however so that was very sweet of her.

They know a sucker when they see one, Fada, but I do know plenty of men that are also suckers for kitties. Perhaps kitties just look for that gene and both sexes carry it. Tucker likes my housemate and they get along fine but he knows this man's personality so he prefers me. I'm a huge sucker for my kitties and they can wrap me around their furry little tails.

It is Aloha Friday, Angela. I've been up since 4:45 am and the colony and Tucker are content. I'm sure all of the kitties will be very interested in the house building. I think this will be a big adventure for them.

Last night they had to inspect the cleared lot. I was so amused by their antics. They do believe someone has provided the best kitty toilet in the world however. My garden is going to feel neglected.

Thanks, Tzia, my kitties keep me well entertained. I'm so happy that my 15 buddies in the colony all love each other and play together. Tucker goes out and talks to them and they answer. It's a good life, indeed.

My cat is afraid of the outdoors, (actually he is afraid of just about anything). Predator species, pfth, anyone that determined that cats are a predator species never met my cat. His idea of hunting is pouncing on his food bowl.

He is a sweet guy though, just strange.

Jonathan that's really funny and very sweet. When Tucker was in Portland he could go outside to play a bit. It cracked me up that he would go nuts to get back in if he needed to go to the bathroom. It took him at least 14 years to figure out he could pee outside. Because Chloe comes into the house if the screen door is open I shut it when Tucker is on the lanai. You should hear him gripe when he discovers he can't get in. He acts like a grumpy old man and will admonish me when I open the screen.

Well the cat really doesn't like change all that much, (though for some reason, he does not mind flying, though when he is in our plane, he is pretty much king of the castle so that might be fine), so I just wonder how he will react to moving yet again when I move back to canada. Of course he just may not remember the last time when he moved here to Illinois, so it may just be another disappear for a month situation again.

Tucker was in the same house for 16 years and then flew to the island. He didn't seem to mind at all and embraced his new surrounding quickly. He didn't take to his new litter box for a few days but we got him back into the routine when I changed his brand of litter. I think he really likes being warm all of the time however so that's a bonus.

The first night he was here my housemate yelled at him for sniffing his plate of food. He yelled at me saying, "Haven't you trained that cat?" Well, my daughter had always shared her food with him so this was a new thing for him. The next morning we were getting ready for the beach and my daughter remarked, "Tucker, why are you sitting in the beach bag?" Then my housemate began stuffing his junk inside the bag and asked, "Why is the beach bag wet inside". OMG I lost it laughing as Tucker got his revenge for being unfairly yelled at the night before and for my housemate for yelling at me. I tried to keep my cool but it wasn't happening for me. Tucker doesn't like it if I'm yelled at, sick or sad and will, like your kitty, stick to me like Velcro.

well he doesn't mind flying, when we flew him down here, he was really calm, slept most of it on the seat but was purring (private jet), so maybe he just liked the gentle vibration of the plane. When he got to his new home though, he didn't like that for some reason.

I don't know how he would handle being yelled at or me being yelled at because he has never seen it before.

Oh and his name is scrapper because he likes scraps of food, especially chicken and pork, beef and lamb not so much. He definitely does like to sniff food but he NEVER has taken anything. He seems to know where his limit of tolerance is.

I've spoiled Tucker with scraps like Scrappy likes. I laugh when I give him soft food he isn't fond of as he will put his head down and his ears and stare at the bowl, then walk away all disgusted. The whole posture is good for great mirth. I know now what he likes and dislikes so he doesn't give me attitude as much any longer.

Most of my little gang of kitties like cheese. The thing is, some like yellow cheese, and won't touch white cheese. Others prefer the white, but won't touch the yellow. When I cook, I like using shredded cheese mixes, so I put a bit in each of the four bowls, and the kitties will go from bowl to bowl, picking out their favorite collor of cheese, squabling with each other, arguing about who got "my" cheese.

Take some cheese, the occasional pouch of Whiskas, and on rare occasions, catnip, add kitties, and get ready for plenty of giggles!

Tucker loves cheese but he likes me to sit on the lanai and feed him bits of it and often will snub it if I put it in his bowl. I do love it when my housemate is cooking meat in the kitchen and I'm on the lanai and Tucker will come out and let me know what's going on. He thinks I need to remind my friend not to ignore his needs. He'll sit by my friend and let him feed him from the table which is nice since the incident of yelling.

Thanks js for the kitty pictures. I love the kitties. No wonder they are afraid of the backhoe - isn't that the one that tore up their yard? Poor kitties. It looks like they are all fed and happy now. Good job on da kitties js.

The first noisy monster came in early November and they didn't like this one bit. This second noisy was a different story. They kind of liked the dirt it left and the piles of rocks and debris. They especially like the boards that were on the property as they are stacked every which way so the cats can crawl under them and lay low until another kitty comes by. They were frolicking with such gusto this morning they made everything well with the world. Now that they are more accustomed to me I'll be able to get much better photos of them. I put out lots of Catnip for them this afternoon. That should be fun, too. Thanks Soovivers!
